Ask Stokely Starter Discs, and The Lefty Conundrum

Dear Scott,

I am 54 years old and in pretty good shape. I am a newcomer to disc golf and would like to get better sooner rather than later. Any suggestions on discs (driver, approach and putter)? Or would I be better off sticking to one disc for now. Right now I'm throwing a 167 gram Cyclone.

Ray,

You'll have to play with different discs to see which fits with your game the best. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

You don't need anymore than these to start. I would suggest playing with them for a while before trying additional models. A big mistake new players often make is to try to learn a whole bunch of discs before they get the hang of a few. It would be best if a new player just learned one midrange disc first, but this recommendation isn't very realistic because everyone wants to throw as far as possible, and tend to quickly add a few drivers to their arsenal. Can't blame them!

Dear Scott,

For a lefty, should references to overstable/understable be opposite from a right-hander?

Matt,

Yes. This area of disc golf instruction often causes some confusion for new players -- especially lefties -- since most players are right-handed and instruction is most often geared toward them.

Here's a quick reference:

Overstable disc/backhand throw (hyzer shot):
    lefty: disc fades right
    righty: disc fades left

Overstable disc/sidearm throw (hyzer shot):
    lefty: disc fades left
    righty: disc fades right

Understable disc/backhand throw (anhyzer):
    lefty: disc fades left
    righty: disc fades right

Understable disc/sidearm throw (anhyzer):
    lefty: disc fades right
    righty: disc fades left
