In the fast-growing game of disc golf, there are five dominant regions of top-level organization: California, Texas, Florida, Minnesota/Wisconsin, and Michigan. Of these, one consistently stands out as the leader in almost every category.
What is it about Michigan -- a cold, snow-covered peninsula for up to one third of the year -- that makes it such a disc golf mecca? The answer is far from simple.
“Nowhere is disc golf stronger than in Michigan,” says PDGA Competition Director and Michigan resident Mark Ellis. “We have everything. Discraft (a leading disc manufacturer) is in our backyard. There is no better regional organization than the Michigan Disc Golf Organization. We have the best retail marketers, the coolest artwork, a ton of courses, the most sophisticated clubs. Ann Arbor has taken the game to where it’s never been before with three 24-hole courses on one site.”
A lawyer by trade, Ellis makes a good case.
The heart of disc golf in the Wolverine State moves to the beat of the Michigan Disc Golf Organization. Through the MDGO, disc golfers enjoy an annual series of events, coordination of the state’s event scheduling and promotion, and ready access to experienced players who are able to assist local clubs and individuals in the proposal, design, funding and installation phases of new courses. The MDGO also serves as a springboard to a stable of volunteers who help to make major events such as the Great Lakes Open and Worlds 2000 run smoothly and professionally.
